Yes, could not post, not logged in, which surprised me. Not trying to change threads from an M6 1 X 12mm which is what my search says is the correct size. Just want to clean out threads from old buggered screw I drilled out which left screw threads from old screw. That okay?

Run the correct thread tap through hole to see if hole/thread will hold, if not drill hole to the next size for next larger screw and get the correct tap.

Yes that is ok
When you get the tap lay one of the bolts on top of the metric tap to see if is the same thread.

You can see if the thread pitch is correct by placing the new screw ontop of one of the original screws if you have one. They should interlock and have no gaps. If it shows a gap than its not correct.

You could heli coil it if you need new threads or use a keensert if you have enough room for one Keenserts are expensive but the best. Bilitools makes a nice and affordable heli coil kit You can get off amazon. I have used a couple different sizes from that brand and they are just as good as the name brand helicoils.

I'm with you, I hate Torx, it's total garbage. Each time I have to remove one, it gets replaced with an allen / cap / button head bolt or screw and the Torx gets recycled. I would try the dremel route, you'll just chew up the torx head anyway. I replaced the fork cover bolts with allen head, stainless with a stainless washer behind them.

One of those occasions when sometime in the past I had stocked up on stainless Allen head M6 screws and lock washers and found them. Yippee-Ki-Yay! I used longer screws than original to account for thickness of lock washers. As you can see in the photo of the right side fork cover I dug a gouge into the cover next to the screw when using channel lock pliers on that screw head, which was cross-threaded thanks to someone screwing it in at an angle. So, another future project needing some JB Weld or Bondo to fill the gouge and repaint the covers. Anyway, thanks for the Allen-Head screw suggestion.
