Tinnitus treatment

Tinnitus NEVER goes away. All you can do is distract (or dull) the brain so it does not obsess.

My hearing is still as good as it ever was (eh! what!) - My ability to react to it when I don't wish to seems to be improving.

I've had it for years as most career Navy do. For most of our careers we are in high noise environments. I destroyed my hearing and triggered the tinnitus from close proximity to naval gunfire and also sitting behind a .50 cal machine gun, M60s and using small arms where ear protection was never practical.

And then there were those darn motorcycles.

When I got my VA physical after retirement the doc told me that it can become so severe that some individuals become almost suicidal. It's with me all of the time but normally not too distracting. Now I always have ear plugs handy for when I ride.

As a Gun Number on a 105mm Howitzer and firing 1000s of rounds of 7.62mm over my 6 years Service ,then then driving heavy vehicles for the next 40 years its a wonder I can hear at all, luckily the Tinnitus is mentally blocked out until someone mentions it or I put on ear Muffs(locking the gate after the horse has bolted) at the Rifle Range , I don't think riding Motorcycles has done anymore damage

Yes, that will do it Ken. I've never heard the term Gun Number. What is that? I used to stand on the deck of the USS Iowa, one of our battleships, as it let loose a 9 gun broadside. The funny thing though is that it didn't seem that loud. The ones that were ear shattering were the 5in/54 twin mounts. They were absolutely deafening.

Our daughter admonished me for riding without ear plugs. She's a DAud and the head Audiologist for the Air Force. She was also an avid rider, touring western and eastern Europe while posted in Aviono, Italy. As a teenager I used to pull the plug on her stereo when I'd come home from work and could hear music from in the hall outside her bedroom door; through her headphones.

Years ago she was one of the supporting researchers on a paper being developed by two Air Force ENTs on hearing damage from riding motorcycles. She was surprised at how high the decibel levels were even while riding with a full face helmet. She assures me that I can continue to damage and degrade my hearing as she lectures me about hearing protection. Boy but those tables sure turned.

A Gun Number is another name for a Gunner, the 105s have a crew of 6 with a minimum of 4, each of the crew has designated task number and each crew member can perform any role, the shorter barrels on the howitzers subject the gunners to more blast effect than larger and longer barrelled artillery pieces,

I have met Mikes daughter and she is one smart cookie so please believe what she says about always wearing ear protection.

My ears ring all the time from years of abuse. Never gave it a though when I was younger. My brain must just tune it out now because I never hear it anymore unless I think about it. Selective hearing. By the way...after viewing this post I am hearing it now big time! Thank you very much..:(:banghead:

Yup, same, running jack hammers, rock concerts, shooting guns, and motorcycles. Maybe spending my life in a family of 99% women, too. Mostly tune it out, but you had to mention it, didn't you?

I developed Tinnitus in May this year and it just came on from Flying. I went to see a specialist who advised it is normal and can just be triggered by something, it doesn't have to be through exposure to loud noises. Its something i am dreading having to put up with. Mine can change from day to day, sometimes i don't really realize that its there, other days it feels like everything reverberates around my ear and like an air explosion has gone off in it.
Does anyone else suffer from this and what do you do? i find it gives me a dizzy/drunk sensation when its really bad. I must have had a hard paper route to develop it at 38 lol

Find an ENT that has heard of Meniere's disease. (Ménière's Disease). I had a fullness moving to severe tinnitus in one ear for a day or so and then got dizzy. Scared me so bad I went to ER. Dizzy, loss of hearing one side, I was afraid of stroke (Dad had one). Never had an episode in 52 years and it has been 6 month since it occurred w/o another episode.

Never did the jack hammer or the 99% women, but I did all the rest. Does shop noise, a wood planer and playing in a band for years count? My ears still ring, but I can still hear pretty good...amazing!
