I do a lot of long distance riding and I usually run the bike until I am down to 20-30 miles left on the tank. Once stopped for fuel I fill up and walk around the fuel stop a couple of times and stretch then off again. Last Summer I did a trip from Chicago to Manhattan Beach, tooled around for a few days and back, 6843miles in 7 days.
I usually start a few days before my trip by switching my meals to slimfast shakes, that way I can keep full sipping shakes while I am riding and not have to stop for food.
When I hit an area where the fuel stations are far apart I buy a 1gal fuel can to stretch the miles between stops.
I have pda phone so I update my website and email to family every time I stop for fuel, that way they know where I am at and it limits stopping to take calls.
