What a day, using my torque wrench set to 18 pounds I not only twisted one dry sump plug head off but both of them putting them back in after draining the oil out. Luckily I was able to back the broken threaded part out with the allen wrench. It surprised me that both were hollow, no **** wonder they twisted out, has anyone else out there done this?

It was a beautiful day today and I couldn't ride because of this, there wasn't a single place in town that carried a 14 mm 1.5 today.

18 lb/ft seems like an awful lot of torque for those little bolts. I don't even bother with a torque wrench and just snug them up until they're tight and leave them be. I still use the same bolts and even the same crush washers 52,000 miles later.. lol Probably should invest in some washers some day, but as long as they seal, they're doing they're job.. :)

I am going back to my regular allen wrench that I used the first time. I bought the torque wrench for a project on the car and thought I would do it right. I will definitely be adopting my old policy again.

That's a bit worrisome. I've torqued mine down a half dozen times without a problem. Are you sure your torque wrench was set right??

yeah, I checked it and it was right and even had a buddy verify it. The oil plug went back in fine. I agree with my buddy that a hollow plug is not a good idea as strength comes into question. Luckily I will be in the town where I bought it Tuesday. I plan to by 4 of them if they have them.

you talking about the bevel box drain plug? The torque spec is 15Nm on mine. That's more like 11 than 18 ft-lbs. The bolt's not hollow, just hollowed out and there should be a magnet insert in there. If you're not aware of that it can be easy to knock the magnet out and into the case when trying to extract the broken bolt. Couple of good threads on here regarding this topic... suffice to say, been dare, done dat.

No I am talking about the front and rear sump plugs on the touring model. The NM number is 25. I just called my dealer and they don't even stock them so I am down at least a week. I ordered 4 and 4 washers since I was going to be out shipping anyway. That is one thing that has been very frustrating about Triumph dealers. They don't stock hardly anything. If Harley has the edge on anything it is they have fully stocked parts and apparel, it is a shame they can't build a bigger more dependable bike.

Teflon

WELL BOYS if you wrap the plugs with teflon tape and just snug them up they will not leak and will not fall out :)try it
