shock adjustment

I have 440 std, 11/12" progressive shocks that were on the bike when I bought it, but I have no info. on how to adjust. I can turn the top portion by hand... is that correct?. How to do is the question :neutral: TIA

Yup, clockwise increases preload.. they can be stiff, but its a handjob......
 
As bones said,they are stiff.
It can be made easier by standing the bike up straight or lifting the rear wheel off the ground. If you watch closely you can see the thread on the top portion of the shock appearing as you wind it,maybe some light lubricant would help..
Starting at the lowest setting I make a mark with a felt pen and count the number of turns and repeat on the other side.
