Sunshine, Don't be intimidated by flips grough nature, like he said "the internet is cold and impersonal", but you'll love him in person. All who attended were so nice. Most folks were exactly what they seem to be on the net. The fun part was trying to put faces with avatars and screen names. I still don't have everybodys name down yet, but hey, those who missed out, really missed a good time. Next year my wife will probably be there too. Of course, she'll be on the hardly. I keep telling her she needs to ride the rocket, but shes intimitaded by the weight distribution difference. So be it. Somebody needs to ride the dang thang. Either way, I hope to meet you and bear next time. take care, xhdskip..

Avoid - Where's the Love in That

Even though my experience was limited, it's always interesting to interact with folks during the occasional face-to-face get-togethers we are fortunate to have.

Just my 2 pennies, but Barber - and the Birmingham area around it - isn't for everyone. I love Barber (wearing my Barber T-Shirt today) and enjoy Birmingham, yet there was a "mixed" reaction from the crowd that was there the day I went. It seemed like my 3-year old was having more fun than some of the attendees that had ridden in.

Not really. Attendance is voluntary never mandatory. Going is all about me and nothing about you. I was never giving you a tongue lashing, just explaining what the rally was all about, at least for me. Everyone gets something a little bit different from attending. I'd like to see you go next year, it's a nice experience. Whether you do attend is entirely up to you. You are the captain of your own ship.

... However, if it's Maggie, I'll probably ride the KLR. There are many off road trails in the area and I know a few KLR riders that are local so while you guys are doing the pavement, I'll be doing the woods.

If your riding the KLR I'm going to have to get a U-Haul trailer to haul enough oil.
Or maybe just put the KLR and you both in the trailer a so I don't have to ride in 3rd gear all the way......

I mentioned before about the Holiday Inn express in Milton TN. not far from the Blue ridge parkway, Maggie valley, Wheels thru time museum, Cherokee and tons of twisties. The manager there is a biker and will give tours if his time allows. towels and buckets for cleaning. parking under the awning, we even used there meeting room for cards and tellin lies.

Dirty old fart to you. I got some nice pictures of your bike in my album. Don't get blown away out there....

I had a great time. Especially all you guys coming out at midnight to help my tired old ass get the bike upright and down the gravel road of death......

That stuff was like grey ball bearings. Now the KLR would laugh at that but the steering geometry is way different and it has off road tires, unlike the Rocket with slowewr steering, more trail and wider, slicker tires.

That's the truth. If you consistently rev the big thumper over 5K, it sucks oil. Has to do with piston speed and crankcase volume. It pumps the oil past the rings at a high rate....my buddy that has one burned a half quart in less than 5 miles running at 85.

There is a cure. Schnitz racing in Deactur, Indiania offers a 685 kit with a lighter aluminum piston and 2 oil control rings for 200 bucks and that includes pressing in a new liner and honing the bore. Then she will 85 plus all day and no oil consumption and very little vibration as well as return mileage in the high 50's.

They also have a 705 kit with complete head work, high compression piston and tuned exhaust if you want to spend all your time riding the rear wheel. I suspect I'll be doing the 685 this winter, most likely 2, mine and my buddy's.

Unlike the Rocket, I can disassemble the KLR's engine top end in 20 minutes with ordinary metric tools. In one hour, you can gut the cases completely. Nice simple twin cam carbureted engine.
