CAT BYPASS???
Okay I am thinking about doing something to the stock classic and I keep reading "cat bypass". I have figured out what the cat is, I just can't seem to figure out how to bypass it. There was one site with a cat bypass for 400 something US, but it was out of stock and seems a bit pricy for what it is doing. Has anyone done a garage version? Will I need to retune? Should I leave well enough alone untill the warranty runs out? Am I being a git?

$350 installed...gives it a deeper voice, but not deep enough. A bit more power, but never rode one without the bypass. Dealer gave her a new tune, I believe...go for it.

Hi Firemedic.

Please excuse if I'm overstating this. The catalytic converter is in the big box under the bike in front of the rear wheel. The exhaust runs into this from a single pipe and exits in three pipes, one to each silencer (muffler).

A cat by-pass replaces this huge box with a simple stainless steel 1 into 3 adapter. Triumph sell this an an exhaust upgrade. If you get it from a Triumph dealer they can install it for you and re-map the engine management system. You need to do this as the free-er flowing exhaust will cause the engine to run lean and you risk overheating. It won't affect your warranty if done by an authorized dealer.

You can also replace the standard mufflers with Triumph Off Road pipes (TORs) which also need a re-map, but you can replace both the cat and the pipes at the same time and do a single re-map.

It's simple enough to replace them all yourself, but either way you must get a re-map.

Cat by-pass gives you a deeper note and better response.

Plus TORs gives an added snarl on acceleration, plus marginally better response.

Use a TuneBoy to do the mapping yourself and you can unleash the beast properly. Performance improvement is alarming.

I was all set to get the cat bypass and had them set one aside at Southern California Triumph, but then they tell me that the bypass won't work with my stock pipes, that I have to use off road pipes? Is this true?

Absolutely NOT true...I ran stock pipes and cat eliminator on my first rocket with no issues. Second rocket has TOR's & cat eliminator...and they sound awesome, just in case I never mentioned that. :twisted:

RUDEDOG I got the cat bypass WITH the stock pipes. Had no problems at all. I was in your situation a couple months ago, It seems that Triumph wanted to sell more TORs.

It's because the accessories brochure says that the cat by-pass A9600160 can only be fitted with A9608060. My dealer originally told me I can't have the bypass without the TORs but after I pressed him and he dug around he discovered that Triumph do have a tune for cat by-pass without TORs (as we all know). So they eventually agreed.

Now we all know this is the case, but the brochure still says NO. You can't blame dealers for following Triumph's advice, but you can help educate them.

So why does the brochure say "US specification only. Can only be fitted with A9608060"? Anyone know?
