Is there a technically correct position for the handlebars or is it whatever is comfortable is right.

Whatever is comfortable without hitting the tank. Mine are back as far as they will go without hitting the tank in at full turn. By the way, make sure and have a towel or something on the tank when the handlebars are loose. All it takes is one 'Oops!' then you have a scratch or dent.

yep, I can testify.
A towel would have prevented a scratch or two.
Now after you adjust them back,
if they're still not comfortable, you can get the Rivco risers or the Triumph ones.
Either will take em up an inch or two and back an inch or two.
If after all that, you're still not happy with the position,
any 1" harley bars will fit.
You may have to reroute your cables, the only thing you'd need to replace
is the front brake line from the banjo bolt up to the master cylinder.
but such is life...
