Has anyone done this on the Rocket III (Standard). Was wondering was there room in the headlamp pods?

Not for the ballasts, just wondering if the bulbs fitted. Would rather fit HID lights than bolting on auxiliary spot/driving lamps.

I'm sure this must have been discussed before, but cant get search to find any mention of HID at all!
 
I bought the HID lights a couple of years ago .
There was room for the ballasts in the housings.
The problem I had at the time was I could get either the high beams to be HID,
or
By reversing the wires, could get the low beams to be HID,
but no matter how I wired it up,
I couldn't get the HID to work on both the high and low beams.
I hope you figure it out, as mine are still sitting on a shelf unused.
I know it will work, because the dealer in Tulsa took a Standard as a trade in,
that had HID lights and they worked,
but he wouldn't let me tear into it to find out HOW.
Good luck and take lots of notes and pictures.
 
Put a diode between the hi and low input. Cathode to the low.

See if you can find a 5 amp 50 volt diode. If you can't let me know and I can send you one.

If that dosen't make sense, post a picture of the light.

I ain't no electrician,
so that made absoutly NO sence to me.
Could you post a pic of where it would go.
How to solder it , which lead goes where, ect.
If you got a diode laying around, sure, send it on to me,
that way you'll know what it looks like and maybe I can get er going.
I'm still confused though, would this diode be after the switch,
but before the headlights, or in the headlight bucket itself?
I assume in the bucket to keep it out of the weather
but before the ballast?
Any info, like a part number from Radio Shack would be helpful,
and would I need 1 diode or 1 for each light?

Hi Skip,

First can you tell me how you are going to configure the lights? Is one light (bucket) going to be the HID low beam and the other the high beam? Or does the HID lamp also do the hi beam? Do you have info or a picture of the HID wiring plan?

A diode allows current to flow in only one direction. The stock Rocket has two hot wires to each bucket, one is the hi beam and the other the low beam. Only one or the other is hot when you switch between hi and low beam.

If, say you want only the HID on while in low beam and both on when on hi beam. you would connect the diode anode from the high beam connection and the diode cathode to the low beam connection.

Radio shack has one that would be right for this and they are cheaper than the postage.

The end with the band is the cathode. It is a 50 volt, 6 amp diode, four for $2.49.


Of course there is also the ground wire but that dosen't change.

Just managed to win a x4-3, kit really cheap (£27) on fleebay. Its a bi-xenon kit where the bulb/shield moves to give you hi or low. 2 bulbs and ballasts etc, so should be sorted. Can't comment on the quality, but at that price it's worth a punt. Shall see if the bulbs fit in the casing, as they did seem to stick out rather at the back. If not, then they'll go in my daytona or car.
 
Got them fitted and working. Very bright from the off, by takes 10-15 seconds to fully power up. Switching from low-high is almost instant. Beam pattern looks ok.

Got the 8K colour, just as they were cheep. Slight blue tint. Might not be the best in fog/rain though.

The bulbs are quite a tight fit in the shells, as the back-side of the bulb projects out quite alot more than a standard H4. One of the ballasts is fitted by the plenum chamber on the left, the one on the right is fitted up front, by the horn.

Not alot of space under the tank with all the intake gubbins still in there! Will have to swap to triple K&N's soon.

Uses new red/black wires back to the battery for the supply, with the original loom now just switching relays.

Just waiting for it to get dark now, to see the effect in the dark. Was really bright in the day, and could easily set-up the aim against a wall at 4pm.
 
Would like HIDs . but not worth the hassles with the police and mot time as they are illegal in the UK

Yep, so are the TORS!

I'd still rather be able to see more than 10meters ahead when it's dark though. Have deliberately aimed the lights alot lower to avoid annoying anyone. All the original wiring is still in place, so changing back is as simple as changing the headlight bulbs.

They are also hugely more visible during the day. Much less likely to be a SMIDSY statistic IMHO.
