I didn't. I had a Bonneville T100 before the R3. Went on a few Rat runs and realised the Bonnie just didn't have enough grunt.
Bought the Rocket without even riding one. Got the Street Triple R after Triumph SA loaned me a Thruxton for a track day. Got
the track bug and then bought the Daytona.
