Glad you've joined the forum. I once had a problem starting mine with all the same symptoms you have. Gauges sweep, lights come on but no starter. In my case someone had flipped the kill switch on the right side handle bar. I'm guessing maybe there is a short in that switch or wiring that gives you the intermittent failure. Just a guess.
