Headlight lacking?

You should find plenty of info here on the Eastern Beaver company headlight relay kit and headlamp replacement. The relay kit is a must as the addition of real lamps will melt down the ignition switch creating another problem for you. I think most are running the H4 lamps. This is the combo I run. Bought lamps from BikerHiway. www.easternbeaver.com for the relay kit. Try this link for lamps

Has Triumph continued the tradition of s****y headlights that they started with the Bonnie? If so, what's the popular choice?

Ever heard of Lucas Electrics? Substandard illumination on Triumphs started long before your trusty Bonneville.

And yes, just like everything else, there are opportunities for improvement. The EB mod mentioned is certainly an improvement. But if you want some serious lighting, adding to or completely replacing the stock system is probably the way to go.

Not old enough to have experienced that, but have heard plenty about it.

Don't wanna add to the bulk. Has anyone tried a new reflector and lens (say from Cibie), along with a relay to switch power directly from battery to the lamp itself (to get more voltage to the lamp for more lumens)? I assume the EasternBeaver harness does the latter?

better headlights are easy

i have an 08 r3 classic and i bought a pair of hella headlights for it. the difference is night and day. they are all glass, no plastic, and they're the hella E-code headlights. the e-code headlights are for the european market and they claim to provide 400% more light. they don't put out 400% more, but they are a radical improvement to what comes stock. they focus most of the light down your lane rather than splashing it all over the place. stock headlights illuminate overhead signs, oncoming traffic and a lot to the right side ditch. this is where the hella's really shine. you need to get them for the german and french roads, because in england they are built for the wrong side of the road. i got mine from susquehanna motorsports and they're a direct replacement for the plastic headlight housings that come stock on our triumphs. they don't have the provision for the goofy little parking light, but that's easy to cure by snipping the yellow wire and sealing it. they cost $40+ bucks each and accept a standard h-4 bulb. i'm using the osram/sylvania bulbs and they work great. susquehann motorsports is in fleetwood pennsylvania. they're an easy install and mount solidly like the stockers. if you saw the difference you'd understand why they're such a great improvement. for the touring crowd, they also make them in the 7", whereas with the classic and standard the 5-3/4" is correct.

Thank you for the info. It's amazing how much of a difference simple things like efficient lens made of glass help lighting. I hadn't considered the British thing you mentioned...definitely some thing to keep in mind.

I replaced the stock unit with one form Candlepower. Much improvment it light output and distribution. The stock unit is plastic the new one is glass and has the European style horizontqal cutoff.
