I'm a long time cyclist who just bought a project 2005 R3 with an engine tick. Previous owner started troubleshooting but got stalled & engine is partially disassembled. I currently own a '95 Yamaha Virago 750 and a '96 Honda Goldwing 1500 as daily drivers. I hope the R3 will become one sometime soon.

Greetings from sunny North Texas. An engine 'tick' can be hard to chase down without hearing the bike run. If you're an experienced engine builder it shouldn't be hard to find the problem. If not, then you may have purchased an expensive lesson in frustration. Post up pics of your progress and any problems you encounter, someone has been in your shoes already so will help guide you.
