Welcome to the site. The 109 is not a bad looking bike, I found myself looking at it the first time I was in Afghanistan (02/06-05/07) when I started thinking about having a second ride (already had an 06 Gold Wing....which does have reverse by the way). I went and looked at one and also went by the Triumph dealer and looked at the Rocket. I did not test ride either (the Suzuki was not available for demo rides anyway...dealer).
So I started to compare the two and I figured both are weird looking but at different viewing angles they both looked pretty good. Since I already had the biggest touring cycle with everything on it I decided to go with the biggest cruiser made, never had a Triumph so I felt it was time. The dealership (luckily in my hometown) worked with me pretty well and in March of 07, while on my last R&R (for that tour in Afghanistan) I became the proud owner of my 2007 Rocket III Classic (see photo album under Molinoman...plenty of pictures with all kinds of accessories).
I've had the Rocket on two pretty long trips (Nashville 07, Daytona Bike Week/Key West 08) and it was definitely up for the challenge, ran beautifully, around 38.5 mpg, got great comments on it and ate up the miles effortlessly (Key West to Pensacola...855 miles...in one day for instance). At parking lot speeds it handles well, the only problem handling I had was when in Nashville trying to get out of an apartment complex, (before eating at Hooters) and trying to turn out onto the road on an uphill grade (remember that one Scot in Exile? Lil Joe almost had a cow)...that was "challenging" but other than that...no complaints.
Bottom line, I think you and your co-rider will enjoy the ownership of a Rocket and as RocketDaryl said the R3T comes with a lot of accessories already on it that make it "tourable" right from the getgo.
Good luck!
