Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

Fun fact: Rocket 3 cylinder block is Nikasil treated. Nickel-silicon-carbide presence confirmed with a neodymium magnet sticking to aluminium block ;).

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

I would also advise against it unless one needs to rebuild it completely, for example as regular maintenance for all bearings and piston rings and cleaning everything up. The engine is built in layers like an onion and it doesn’t make sense to tear it apart for no good reason. It could have...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

Dipstick tube o-rings are broken. Seems like assembly error - I am not aware of any dismantling operation until now. one chain guide bent and offset (maybe this cause the annoying rattle when hot?!?!). Piston rings are soft at this diameters, I will try to insert the piston from the bottom; the...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

Got courageous and pulled the cylinder block. The pistons and rings are filthy. The chain seems stiff. There is no access on the bottom on the crankcase to remove condos, only thin slots to drain the oil. It is not possible to work on condos or crankshaft without splitting the crankcase in half...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

Getting warmer, spring is coming:). I think there is a way to separate the cylinder block from crankcase by removing gudgeon pins ang lift the block with the pistons inside while leaving conrods connected. I don’t have to crack the crankcase open but just level the cylinders and lift the blocks...

    No rear brake again

The ABS modulator has a pump and valves. Everything, including hill hold and brake lights, is controlled by ECU. There are no switches. When the bike needs, it will break with whichever brake it needs. Regarding the leaks, fluid grade, etc. it worth to see my post with the study attached.

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

On Rocket 3 it’s complicated. It seems you need to remove the sump at least to disconnect the conrods that means to levitate the engine. You cannot remove the cylinder head without tearing down the bike because the engine is stress member. Some of the bolts connecting the frame to the engine go...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

Coming back with better pictures of the barrel block from an ebay sale. I didn’t dismantle mine yet but I have an idea how to insert the pistons from the bottom. I need to build sleeves matching the scallops and for that I need teflon tube or sheet, some collars and some vise or curved pliers...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

I will use a three segments aluminium ladder as overhead crane. Bu I only need it to lower the frame. For installing the barrel block I plan to use piston ring compression tool - the one with thin band with pliers, not the tall/thick one - and I lower the block, one piston at the time, using the...

Thanks for sharing, I learned something new too. English is not my first language, my intention to show confidence and awareness ended up with a different nuance in writing. But sharing information and images will speak better for us. :)

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

I have already a used engine :). Taking into account the asphalt I found and cleaned I reckon mine’s better. It seems this tractor needs deep cleaning on a regular basis. I am also thinking about flushing the engine and open it every 60000 Km. The design is annoying because once yo need to work...

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

I have two versions of the engine shop manuals and a subscription for Triumph’s online one. There are no liners. Only a cast monoblock with three big bores; maybe with Nikasil, maybe not.

    No rear brake again

In my opinion there is a design issue combined with manufacturing issue. You can rebuild all lines, ream and grind surfaces, use good quality washers.

Rebuilding motorcycle after timing chain skip 62K Km

I thought about leaving the barrels in place and just hoping that the old gasket will hold. Dealer’s mechanic suggested that’s not the best choice. I guess he’s right, especially when these jobs are done first time by an amateur. Finding best practices about rebuilding engines with removable...

    Lube the splines...

I grease the splines first time at 62000 Km due to unintended major overhaul. Never had any issues or need to do it earlier. I admit it depends a lot on climate a road dirt. The swinging arm is full of cast/ventilation holes like a Swiss cheese so those riding in dusty areas may see a lot of...

No need to warm up, just push firmly. Ball bearing grease, Castrol Spheerol. The needle is thick.

This is my deep needle bearing greasing tool. The manufacturer thinks it’s for steak marinade :). Some dentist’s instruments found their good use too :).
