Aerocharger Rocket... to buy or not to buy

After speaking with Mike Stegmann at Latus motors and asking him the questions that I had, and the ones warp9.9 gave me to ask him, I'm convinced that the bike is set up and tuned properly and is going to be awesome. I've put a deposit on it and will be trailering it home in two or three weeks. I'm pretty excited. I'm sure I'll have many questions and stories for you guys in the future. Hopefuly 2nd gear will hold for many torque filled miles.

UPDATE:

I bought it and it's awesome! My first story is a sad one though... I actually crashed on my test ride. Most humiliating experience of my life.

Short version is a corner came up on me out of nowhere and all I could do was brake as much as possible and go straight off the road, fortunately into some grass and dirt. I went flying over the handlebars as the bike hit a dip. I ended up about 30 ft away. I remember bouncing and then rolling several times. It all happened so fast. I was probably going about 45 to 50 MPH when I was thrown. Probably braked from about 90 or 100 MPH. The bike went down on the left side, flipped up into the air off of the windshield, rolled in the air and landed on its right side where I found it still running, tire turning in 4th gear. Is there no lean angle cutoff sensor on these?

Damage includes the tank, bear claw, windshield, left head light, sheared left stop on the lower yoke, busted right turn signal and scuff marks on the left bag. The bike goes straight down the road but the handlebars look like they're slightly turned to the left. I'm pretty sure the fork tubes just turned in the yokes/triple trees and I just need to loosen and realign. Nothing major appears bent or broken other than the stop on the lower yoke. I rode the bike back to the seller's house (again... humiliation central) and have put another 100 miles on it since getting it home.

I was stupid to be going that fast on an unfamiliar road on an unfamiliar bike without seeing clearly at least a mile or more in front of me. I was paying more attention to the bike than the road. I swear I must have been looking down at one of the gauges too long because all I remember is seeing this corner in front of me when I thought I was on a long straight road. The road had a slight incline so I'm guessing the corner was only visible maybe 1/4 mile away at most. That's not much space at 100 MPH when your not paying attention. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Fortunately I'm fine. No broken bones, just a contusion near my upper left pelvic bone and strained ligaments in my left foot. I could not walk upright for about 4 days. This was on March 2nd. It's now almost back to normal.

I found a tank on eBay with the factory flames I really like (see last picture). It's on it's way. The rest of the parts will be bought new. I will JB weld the turn signal (I'm thinking about aftermarket ones anyway) and will probably have the stop on the yoke welded instead of replacing it. The brackets on the windshield are wasted. I'm not sure I'll be able to bend them back. Probably a total loss there. Wanted to use them on a Clearview shield. I got really lucky though. It could have been much much worse.

I have now been warned by the bike that physics is boss (I've never crashed before) and the horsepower and torque on this machine MUST be respected. I'm actually thankful for the lesson as I probably would have gotten too crazy on it and crashed even worse eventually.

I'm honestly blown away by this thing. At 212 HP and 225 ft/lbs torque I knew it would be quick but imagining it and experiencing are two totally different things! You guys with a blower AND the Carpenter mods are totally frickin' nuts. This is certainly all the power I'll ever need! Acceleration to 100 MPH almost instantaneously and on this bike you don't realize how fast you're really going. MUST.... BE.....CAREFUL! Pulls HARD even in 5th gear. Again, I'm glad I learned my lesson early on.

I've got a few questions and issues but I'll post those separately. Here's a couple of pics. The seller described the bike as a 9.5 out of 10 and he wasn't lying. 7,500 miles and it looks brand new... well, at least it did. And it will again. When I'm done with it it'll be even better.

Glad to hear you are ok just remember when its back together if you lose respect for it you will be in trouble fast ride safe

I'm really surprised that there are not more stories like this. The Rocket is BIG,HEAVY and MEAN! I was pretty prepared in advance, but like we know, the ride is so smooth, the speed isn't noticable. What got my attention, was the first time I got up to 50 mph, squeezed the clutch in, and OMG, this thing coasts forever! (800# + rider). Thank God for my ABS on my 2013 Roadster. Has already saved my butt once.:D

My first near surprise on the R3 just after I bought it was on a sweeping on ramp to a highway. I was cleaning up on an HD and as I got to the middle of the turn over 70 mph the thing is moving towards the guard rail and I'm going turn you mother. Fortunately I leaned on it and didn't crash. Lesson learned. Watch out for big mo (momentum).

ABS was a great addition.

Glad to hear your ok Torque addict, funny how things sneak up on you at 100 mph.. I like the new tank!

I had a similar experience coming out of Virginia city Nevada, I was so busy passing my buddy on his H.D I failed to notice the corner coming up, I braked hard, leaned as far as I could and hoped for the best, scraped up the floor boards a bit, but made it through ok.....

Changed my Drawers when I got back to the hotel...
