I just switched back over to a bike tire this morning . . I'm heading out on a cross country trip here soon and pulling a trailer so . . I decided to switch back for now due to some issues on crappy roads with a darkside and pulling the trailer. Anyway . . seems I may have been a little aggressive on my cornering. Half of the "Goodyear Eagle" lettering and logo were worn off the sidewall . . . and no, it wasnt rubbing anything. That might be something to watch folks . . . I'll see if I can get a picture or two and post them.
 
Thanks Dave; very couragous to post these. This is of course my fear. I have no doubt that with time you can get used to the handling and it pisses me off that there are so many compromises you have to make with the only alternative to forking out big time on MTs. But it boils down to safety with me more than cost. I know CTs suit a lot of people and good on them, but the way I ride I reckon I'd be risking the same problem.

I have, by the way, seen Hanso's tyre and believe me, he rides like a ........- well, bloody fast - on very twisty roads and he doesn't have this type of wear, so there are obviously many factors involved.

As I said, couragous of you. Now, brace yourself for everyone telling you that you were under inflated or you were riding wrong - just about anything other than the fact IT'S A CAR TYRE on a motorcycle.
 
Heh . . not courageous, just facts. I will probably be back on a CT later but . . . the goodyear is not a good choice. (The Riken seems to be a little more rounded and has more tread on the edges.) In all the miles I had put on this tire, I never felt unsafe, never slipped in the corners, none of that. I have about 16,000 miles on this tire and after looking at it, and knowing the way I have ridden it, I think that it was NOT a good tire choice.
 
I got 34000 on my Riken Raptor Dave and the tread was pretty worn and you know how I ride. The side wall which was ridden flat for about 5 miles showed an almost similar pattern. The side tread was pretty well smoothed out but there was a gap between the flat ride scuffing and the normal side turning wear. I put the narrowest and tallest Raptor on it again. 205 60 16 helps with the uneven pavement issues and performs well in corners.
 
Now that's a well used tire, got your money's worth out of that one.
 

Yeah under inflated that's why I don't get that kind of wear there is a fine line between over and under and you need to experiment
 
One thing I cant understand about the darkside is cost being a issue. I can understand wanting maximum traction in a straight line due to the torque, great wear if you never lean the bike and you were sick of wearing the center down to nothing with the sides 100% left, better traction in the rain, better load handling, etc. Considering a motorcycle is hardly pratical compared to a car (even more so anyplace it snows) and the fact you pay 10k to 16k +++ for the rocket which is really overpriced compared to the fact you can get many cars with 4 times the raw materials in them, I don't see the point of doing it from a cost perspective. IMHO
 
Cost has never been the issue for me, as mentioned by CanberraR3 I am little bit aggresiveand when you consider most get 20,000 miles and when you convert 16,000 klm to miles I have only gotten 10,000 miles out of my Darkside (he might be right) but every bit of it has been fun I am not quiet down to the wear bar yet but the outer edges are slick when I first got the Rocket and while riding what I call conserveitly I still only managed 6,000klm or 3,728 mile out of the Metzler and a lot of the time it was treated carefully butit still sqirmed and when people talk about going on the sidewalls I laugh because the metzler was a lot more hairy if you took it past the edge as I did several time past the end of the thread and actually stared going on to the sidewall and sliding, I was lucky to be able to catch the rear end... puckering moments indeed!!!!
I run a darkside for safety not cost pure and Simple, oh and I don't care what it costs I just asked my tyre guy to get me the stickest tyre in my size 245/50-55/16
