Roadster seat modification

Hi, wonder if someone might help. I'm beginning to think my rider's seat might have been cut down by the PO. The reason is, the vinyl cover is some way from the foam, sort of stretched over, probably nearly an inch gap in the middle of the seat. Question - does the seat cover sit firmly against the foam or is there in fact a gap?

That's the way it is on mine, came that way new.
