Radiator Filler Cap Removal/Rocket 3

Does the small lock nut on the side of the radiator filler cap need to be completely removed, or just loosened, to take the radiator cap off of the Rocket 3? Thanks everyone.

It usually does not have to be removed, but some have said that they needed to take it out to get the cap off. Some discard it. Mine didn't have one when I got it. I just bought a new one a few weeks ago, just as a preemptive move since mine was 11 years old & the new cap did not come with a lock down screw either..... As tight as that cap is I can't imagine it ever getting loose w/o the screw down anyway.

I had to back mine out, but didn't need to remove it.

Remove it throw it up in the air and give it a good kick on the way down, in plain english dump it

also in case a harley driver just wants to mess with u and take your cap. might be hard to come by in the middle of nowhere

A small pair of metric needle-nose pliers should fit.

I used a metric adjustable, but needle nose work also as @idk said above.
I take it all the way out, with my luck it would fall into the opening of the radiator as soon as I took off the cap.

never replaced mine after first time I took it off ,no dramas

I think some bored engineer type at triumph came up with the idea just to mess with us.
