Power socket query

Right folks, so I paid for the power socket, and the "Triumph" (suspiciously like optimate..) power adapter thing for trickle charging.

As it turns out, not only have I not explored the bike to find out where it is, I am curious as to what people use the socket for. Is it cigarette lighter type socket?

I got it in case I needed to charge my HTC desire (goodbye iphone you were crap) on longer trips, or for anything else that might come up..

Is the Triumph optimate-a-like plug put into the auxiliary power socket?

This may seem stupid questions, but I have only used the bike twice now (well... one long weekend when I picked it up!!).

Anything that should be borne in mind when using this, is there a max current/amp rating, is this bad for the battery? Does the engine need to be on when using something?

No manuals came with the factory fitted kit, very helpfully..
 
Electrical socket

I use mine to plug in my Gerbig's heated gloves......works great, and the Triumph techs say it draws next to nothing. They also added that should I decide to add a heated jacket, pants and socks, that on the road it would be fine, but in stop and go traffic, it would be best to shut them all off.........

Thanks for that. I got the heated hand grips OEM fitted - and just in time for a scorching summer in England as well lol.. Although will be heading up to the Highlands for some real driving..
 
It's got the BMW type plug in (usually in the US we have to get the adapter), I haven't used it yet, mainly got it to power my air compressor I keep in the beetle bags if I need to fill the tires.

I changed my factory one to a normal ciggerette lighter type one, took all of 60 minutes to do, and just brought a marine grade one, drilled the hole bigger in the case plastic casing for it, piss easy.............
use it to charge my HTC while on the move
 
I just wired in my own (fused) cigarette lighter socket mounted under the seat behind the battery and I use that to power my GPS, Radar Detector and to charge my phone via USB. I wired it into a switched live from the fuse panel (I forget which one), so everything goes on and off with the ignition key.
 
My cig lighter is mounted in the blank where the relocated key switch would go. That triangular plastic cover on the left side below the tank (the one no one could find to remove when following the GIPro install ). The plug is mostly used to light smokes, but it works well for when I use the GPS and if I ever need the tire pump kit. I also keep a small spot light in the air filter box just in case.

It is indeed useful - I find the OEM alarm seems to drain the battery fairly quickly - but then I am not using the bike every day!

I note that SF guys in theatre always use power sockets with car cigarette lighter sockets - so they dont need to use multiple plugs, which is a bit of a pain to lug about!

I note in the UK there are cheapie small portable Maplins or B&Q solar panels for sale, which will either charge your mobile or other things too, even on overcast days - so perhaps this could trickle charge the battery..
 
Ok...so to be clear as I wish to use this for phone (GPS) long trips and not lighting a cig....the until has USB ports? Not a power point like auto/cig?
