I recently had what I thought was a primary TPS problem. My tick-over was low and it stalled every time it tried to idle. It also surged on a constant throttle when cruising.

My dealers fitted a new TPS and set up the voltage. They said they didn’t mess with the tune, they had been warned not to, but Richard at TTS said they could set up the TPS without screwing things up. After it was fitted the bike ran so badly that I assumed they had and told them to send it back to me.

I took it to a local tuner, who is unfamiliar with Tuneboy but has been tuning mainly race bikes for 20 years and he was willing to give it a go. He spent a day and a half trying to get the bike to talk to the lap top consistently, but had a lot of trouble downloading software and drivers from Tuneboy’s site. He made a great deal of progress but it was no where near right when he tried to download the latest version of Tuneboy it ceased working altogether, and yes, he had uninstalled the last version first. Thankfully he charged me two hours labour and put the rest down to experience!!

Les had kindly lent me his PC111 in case all else failed, thank God he did.

The bike was due back at the dealers to have clutch plates swapped so while it was there I got them to download the Triumph tune for CAT delete and ToRS so we knew what the base tune was and then took it back to the tuners for him to tweak it with PC111.

When he first tried it it was running on one! He took what plugs he could get at out from the back two and they were black as the hobs of well and wet. So cleaned them up (he didn’t have any in stock) and put them back before leaning the PC111 out. The previous tune must have been a bit rich! I wasn’t surprised at the Triumph tune making them wet, I was surprised at Richard’s tune making them black.

He got it running, it would tick over consistently and would give a smooth full throttle run. Now pay attention, coz this is where it gets interesting. At part throttle openings it was surging. Between 8% and 15% throttle openings it would consistently die and pick up, die and pick up.
Steve managed to capture this while it was happening, at about 10% throttle;

Given the delay in the A/F vs top graph it looks like it’s cutting fuel, but what struck me is the consistency of the shape of the A/F wave?????? WTF??

Not only that, but here is a full throttle run with A/F;

The massive tail off at the end isn’t the limiter. It’s too low for that. Steve tried to fatten up the A/F up there, but all that did was made it drop to 160 @ 5900rpm and then plateaux at that until the limiter.
For comparison here’s the last graph from Richard;

Any suggestions gratefully received. I’m supposed to be away the weekend after next and I need to get this sorted by then so any help is much appreciated.

Perds,
as you know,
Pig9r is the resident guru of tuneboy over here.
I'm afraid I'm no help whatsoever,
but I sure hope you get it sorted out.
Shame to have the best lookin bike in England as a doorstop.
There's enough tuneboy expertise around, you'll figure it out.
Good luck bro,
skip

What is the status of your O2 sensor? Removed, replaced with Dynojet bypass, left in but turned off in Tuneboy?

Do you have a check engine light on? Have you checked for any trouble codes?

Tried cleaning the crank angle sensor?

Check vacuum lines under the tank.

Ask Richard if there is a power valve and if it could be bad or not reading the actual engine vacuum is it going into a supercharger roll?

Check the air/temp sensor.

Verify TPS voltage is correct.

Otherwise remove blower, send it to me to try on my bike to see what is wrong.

Sorry to hear of your trouble, Joker. My first impression was that you p[ossibly had a bad batch of petrol, but seeing the consistency of the fluctuation in performance put that wild guess to bed. As I know about as much about engine diagnostics as I do of quantum physics (zilch), I will shut up now and proceed to the time out corner to learn what the cognoscenti have to say!

Ok you computer gurus I have been on the phone with my Brother Perd's (Joker)and we are working on getting his tune boy down loaded and running on his lap top. I of course am not a expert on computer stuff so I am posting on this the thread in case he needs help. He has windows XP and went back in the house to plug into the net. incase it needs to search for any drivers and such. He does have a disc for tuneboy. I don't know if there is a chat room on this site anymore if so maybe we can all get together and help him. Once he gets it to open I plan on him loading my tune into the tune edit so it is ready to go when he hooks to the bike. I think I can walk him thru it from there.
Let me thank all of you for helping in advance as I am sure Perd's (Joker) will be greatful.

****, I thought we had it liked there.

Many thanks to Scott for spending the last couple of hours getting me started. I now have Tuneboy loaded in my laptop, the cable is recognised, the light on it is flashing red, but still can't load a tune. We've tried the recover from failed download procedure a number of times. The Download button goes yellow for a second after this, but the reverts to white.

Any ideas??

anyway while you were posting I was typing so let me post this as it might help Perd's I think you need to switch your cable type to number 2
I will await your call tomorrow so we can tackle this monster and I have sent an e-mail to Richard to ask him about the stepper motor.

Ok so Perd's has tune boy on his lap top and he installed his key before he went down to the bike. once at the bike we first turned on the tune boy dash to watch it hook up in which it did. We ran some test like on the fan and fuel pump to verify that a signal was being sent to the ecu. All was well. Next we opened tune edit and the first thing we did try to download the tune but the down load button would not turn yellow. So we checked the property screen to see if anything needed to be set and well the serial port had none written in it. So Perd's hit the drop down menu and it had tune boy cable (com5) available so he set it to that. Mine is set at (com4) [I think this reads what the cable is plugged into as its why mine is at (com4) I do remember his cable type was set at 5 which used to be USB on older tune edits, and mine is set at 2 does anyone know what it should be at. I also noticed that someone has plugged his idle stepper motor back in as I could hear it from the UK on the phone pulsating as it tries to find open and closed. The SC kit has it being removed and I suspect it was hooked back up by the tech that rebuilt his tranny. I was wondering if this is creating a fault since the ecu is waiting for it to find open and shut positions and maybe the tune boy cannot down load while the ecu is still performing a cycle. What are your opinions? We also tried to recover from failed download in which the download button would turn yellow for a brief millisecond and then back to white.

Oh and no problem brother as I am gimped up and can not do anything anyway

It's a pain in the ass but keep changing the comm port settings until it connects. There are several possiblities but try them all. You also have to close and reopen tunedit each time.

Perds, did your computer recognize the tuneboy cable (USB to serial cable)? When plugged in is it recognized as hardware in the control panel?

If the LED is blinking steady your computer recognizes it and the drivers are likely installed correctly. It is just a matter of telling Tuneboy which comm port it is in. When it starts blinking very fast, almost looks like it is not on at all, is when it is communicating with the bike.

Thanks guys. I'm gunna have a stiff drink and sleep on this. I'll update in the morning when I've tried a few of your suggestions.

Yep it hooked up with the dash and we ran some test like the fan and fuel pump and reset adaptives he also seen it link up by retrieveing the serial number and telling him it connected. I always open the dash first as seeing it link up is great to bad the edit does not have a window in it telling you your connected.
Thanks for all your responses I look at it this way everytime I have problems which are few and far between I learn something from the tune boy and you guys.
