I use Quad-Lock to my USB outlet of the Garmin and a right-angled USB cable. Shown above without the phone in the case.

Do you actually need a GPS and a phone hanging on your bars?

Depending on what roads and weather, yes.
Toronto has the worst traffic in North America and on our longer trips, seeing the weather up the road is handy. Unfortunately, Garmin’s app is sh1t, so the need is there.
Sometimes there's no cell service so the need for the GPS.
When you do the trips my wife (on her HD) do, you prepare for all cases.

Awesome sturdy phone mount. Ram also has a bar mount they call “torque”, it can be used on multiple bar sizes and uses a 1” ball for mounting whatever your heart desires.

I will just fill up with gas again till I "find" myself flip phone all it does is make and take calls
