after thinking the drivetrain lash was getting a bit noisey I jacked up the bike and started the engine, while the bike was only at idle the clanking was frightening and got worse in higher gears.Has anyone else done this?im thinking as the wheel was hanging in midair it could be making things worse due to the angle.i cant find excessive play at the final drive end, and the noise seems to be at the rear of the motor.final drive oil has been changed and splines greased with moly 5k miles ago.any ideas anyone?

don't like to ask guys but could someone jack up their bike and run the motor through the gears at idle.please please please let me know what you hear.mine sounds like the bottom of the motor is about to drop out.

Always curious to know: Assuming this is a Rocket, what year and how many miles?

There is a rubber cush in the bevel box, where the wheel fits it. It is probably worn and needs replacing. It is held in by a cir-clip and is an easy job to replace.

update...

so today I removed the wheel, checked cush drive rubbers and all bearings, all ok.removed bevel box no sign of any wear in splines no slop in the drive, bearings again ok.

took a pair of grips to the drive shaft end in the swingarm,in neutral it was smooth to turn but with slight drag.also the shaft kept catching on the swingarm tube,(bloody annoying)

in gear I could turn the shaft about 1-2cm back and forth before hearing the CLUNK at each end of the play.the clunk is in the area of the gearchange lever(I think)

is this normal or am i just being a bit paranoid.

anyway to go any further does anyone know what needs to come off.can I check the drive shaft UJ without removing the swingarm ?

thanks

I'm watching this post carefully. My 2013/14 is at the shop now. (7000 miles). They saw the final drive (bevel box) was seeping oil (the second one on my bike!) so they ordered another from Triumph. Won't be here till Tuesday, or so. I told them I'd like the swing arm pulled, to have a look see at the u-joint and rear out put bearing. I told them I'd pay the labor, if nothing is found wrong. I might hear from them by the end of this coming week. They are short handed at the time, so I told them no hurry, as I have 2 more bikes and 2 cages to drive. Yes, I miss my Baby. I'd much rather get in there and put my hands on stuff, but warranty being what it is...............
