I made the bonehead move of touching my rubber tank supports (part number T2400478)...they looked a little loose, but I should have left well enough alone. Anyway, I ripped them off and needed a quick fix. I found that the rubber nuts used for sport bike windshields make a great solution for attaching the rubber supports in the blind holes of the frame. Here are the hardware items I used. Note that if you can get a rubber nut that is tapered it will fit the blind hold in the frame easier. I did have to use a rubber mallet to seat it though.

#8-32 x 14/32 Expansion Nut
Corresponding countersunk screw

I also tried #10-24 x 9/16 expansion nut that was close and can work if you have variance in your hole diameter.

Hope this helps.

Great idea using the mallet.

I somehow lost one of mine. I will admit that when I got the bike it only had one that had been cut in half!

Ended up buying another set from a wreaker put them on and about a month later the tab holding the tank down broke.

Turns out that there are two different types of rubber mounts and I had brought the thinner of the two.

Fixed it buy cutting up a pushbike inner tube and a couple of ziplock ties.

But it's a Metric bike! ;)

I guess rivnuts would do the job too. - Neat idea.

Mmm never thought of that. I just addrd some permatex to mine and stuck them back down. Did that in 07 if they come off I'll report back :)

@warp9.9 I I thought about gluing them as well, but I wanted a way to remove them if they deteriorated and still have a clean mating surface.

@barbagris I still have trouble finding metric hardware and parts at my local hardware stores. Catchy most fasteners I can get. However, a lot of the specialty items like these expansion nuts I couldn’t find in metric locally.I suppose there’s always Amazon. However I do try to support the local businesses when I can and also minimize the downtime on my bike.

Unless you have prime, another issue is $6.99 shipping on a $1 part. I usually group my buys so I order at least $25 for the free shipping.
