Cold start. Start, stall, start, stall, start, runs great.

Hi all,

I suspect my issue is the TPS or stepper voltage but I thought I'd ask for some opinions. I’ve done some searching here and it seems to be the likely culprit.

After the bike sits for a while, it takes 3 tries to get it to start and run. I start it up, it stalls within 10-15 seconds, start it again, it might run for 30-45 seconds, and then on the third try, it starts, revs to about 1500 and back down to 800ish and runs fine.

This behavior started after having my dealer load the tune for "after market" pipes. I have the D&D slipons. It should be noted that after they loaded the tune, I had to go back and get the voltage reset for the stepper and things were fine for a few days after that. I am not ever going back to that dealer... there were other issues I had with them and they are incompetent.

I still have not ordered the Tuneecu cable due to an issue I'm having with Paypal. I'd sure like to get one or work out some kind of trade for anyone in my area to help me with Tuneecu.

I’m in Airdrie, Alberta so if anyone in the Calgary area can spare a bit of time one day, I could use some help.

Thanks!

Bingo! They forgot to reconnect my cooling fan after checking the cooling system. This was on top of not setting the voltage correctly once before.

I found out that the mechanic at The Old Motorcycle Shop rides a Rocket so I think he'll be the guy I try next. I have a bit of a wobble decelling at around 65 k too, but it could just be a balance issue. Either way, no more Blackfoot for me. Im going to try sort out my Paypal issue and order a cable. Tuneecu, here we go.

Jeff, I've heard that Echo Cycle is good to deal with. You have any experience with them? Might be worth a ride up there.

I bought my bike at Echo.... Pleasant experience. I have not tried the service department yet. I did take heart that both the salesman and the parts guy ride their own Rockets.

Your doing the right thing by asking who to let take care of your bike..i have no mechanical skills at all and it took me awhile to find 2 independent shops.
I now have 1 for the Rocket and another for the Goldwing...both of these guy's ride the bikes they specialise in.
Each know what their doing and both know their respective bikes backwards..better still I trust them both to take care of my bikes

Here's a question. Could a dirty crank sensor cause these symptoms? I've had a very occasional high/stuck throttle in the past and cleaning the sensor seems to fix that problem for a lot of people. I wonder if when the oil gets turn up, it clears itself while the bike warms up. It is so consistent that things are fine on the third start and once the bike is warm or hot, things are nearly perfect until the next cold start

I'm going to have a look at this when I change my oil but I wonder...

Could be the CAS but I doubt it as I would expect that would do it all the time ... Still won't hurt to clean it
Check that you temp sensor wire is on properly, it is at the front left side of motor just in behind throttle cable pulley on # 1 throttle body where top Radiator hose goes in to thermostat housing in the head

I'll give that a look too! Thanks.
