I'm impressed. Looks like BMW has used 2 sets of intake cam lobes for each intake valve. The cam shifts forward and back on the intake valves as needed. The cam shifts one way to access the high lift, long duration lobes for full power applications and the other way to mesh with the medium lift/duration lobes for low to mid range ones. In an effort to maximise intake air velocity and swirl at low speeds, the 2 intake valves per cylinder open at different times.

I wonder how long it will last before issues crop up..... if any? That Boxer engine looks like it will continue to be around for a long time.

Variable valve timing is nothing new, works in cars and bikes for decades without major problems. For example Honda is using cam switching in VFR line since 2002 or so.

Bmw.. Looks like after decades of self pleasing lunacy with agricultural technology they are going to fit the proper engine in that bike.. finally.
