Yes they do open away from the bike ,that was my original worry that they would hit the trunk on the upswing ,But it does not look to be a problem.
Upbeat, is the picture in your avatar in Ontario somewhere?
Looks like a cool road!
I,m from the Newmarket area.

Don't the r3t panniers open away from the bike? Are you thinking it'll hit the underside of the trunk?

The Harley clone trunk from Scootworks does block the panniers if you are using the removable stock R3T rack Up-beat, as the trunk is quite wide. This can be fixed by using a 1" lifting spacer of some kind. The Mutazu is narrower, so it's quite likely it won't block the panniers.

Putting backrest etc. on a Scootworks Trunk

I got mine back from the painter (gloss black) and reinstalled the latch & hinge hardware. To mark the bolt hole locatiions I used white-out (for letters etc.) on the ends of the bolts sticking out of the backrest and carefully postioned them against the trunklid, leaving white circular marks where I drilled the bolt holes. I did the very same thing for the luggage rack on top of the trunklid. The backrest & luggage rack just bolted onto the lid.

I ended up getting the Mutazu DMV and it fits perfectly.
I did have to unbolt the backrest from the rack but was able to bolt it back together using new nuts.
It looks really nice and matches the bike, the hardbags open no problem .., mine has the regular backrest padding on the trunk so it looks different from the one in J Dukes above picture.

I bought a trunk at a swap meet 15yrs ago for 10 bucks. It had a pole seat pole and spring for an old FLH inside it. That should give you the size of this thing. I never did use it and Kerry just laughs at it. I still might use it. A quick detach for your room or when the trip is over. I sure like the trailer. You can go grocery shopping!
