Pretty bad but it seems that there could have been a greater loss of life. It was apparently a tourist destination. I just read a report that there are no signs of life.
I looked down into the Kilauea volcano from the Ewekahuna Bluff observatory in about 2002 and decided I never wanted to get near one of those again. The crater collapsed during the eruptions of 2018 and I believe took the observation platform with it. I'm glad it didn't happen when my wife and I were standing on the causeway looking into the volcano.
I saw Mt Etna during a mild eruption while transiting the Straits of Sicily on a guided missile cruiser back in 1982. It was one of those stunningly beautiful clear days with the sea like a lake. Etna was visible on the horizon with a line of smoke coming of her being pushed northward. It was pretty awe inspiring.
Ah, I just did a search for Italian volcanoes and one can book a walking and riding tour starting at $1800. That's nuts.
