Polishing Wheels

Just about to do mine in the next few days , I will do what i have always done when the rims get shabby . I use a set of mushroom headed mops on a die grinder with blue soap , then polish off with a soft cloth and Vienna lime and finish with a clean mop again in the grinder. It takes no longer and is a lot less hard work than autosol . The results are awesome and last a good couple of years . The key to it all is the Vienna lime , basically a finely powdered calcium carbonate . It takes off all the greasy smut that usually makes this kind if polishing harder than it's worth . If the wheels are badly tarnished , start with a brown soap to cut thru the grime , change the mops and then finish with the blue or a white !
If you don't have a die grinder , a cordless drill works almost as well .

Talking about polishing rims not going for a bar lunch(mushrooms -magic of course)Vienna Lime --a strong drink:D

Did you learn all that on kitchen floors Nath
No the kitchen table . :p
In actual fact , one of the first jobs they gave me when I started working on the Bentleys was polishing the modified rocker tops and cooling ancillarys on the 20/25 blower engines . Some was done on a wheel , but the more intricate bits were done with mops . The secret is definitely in the lime . I soon progressed past that job thankfully . But was all knowledge learned !

What is this 'lime' stuff? I'm sorry, but you will be educating a complete buffoon on the intricacies of polishing your bits

When you use polishing mops and soap , the soap leaves a black waxy deposit over the work piece which is really hard to remove . No matter how hard you try the metal goes dull again as you try to remove it . As Chris says, the Vienna lime is literally like talcum powder . Dust it over the surface and polish it off with a soft cloth . It removes the soap residue so the final buff with the mop brings up a deep lustre .

Just remember , if using mops and polishing soap , use the soap sparingly little and often , change mops if changing soap compounds and don't apply too much pressure . Oh and wear gloves , can be a bit messy !
