The Official Rocket Across America IV Thread

Well, my RAA IV was short lived. I met Boogerdave at 5:00 am to head out. We got exactly 44.7 miles from where we met and the clutch shaft snapped in half. Of course, I didn't know the exact problem until I got towed to the dealer. I started tearing into it roadside until I realised the radiotor was going to have to come off for me to get a peek. It would've been futile, knowing what I know now so I'm glad I didn't get much past pulling the cowling off before deciding to get a tow. Anyhow, the dealer has to order the parts and probably won't have them before Tuesday or Wednesday. Had he been able to get me back on the road by 4:00 (that was my self-imposed cutoff), I'd have still made the trip. Oh well...

Ya'll have fun!

Rain stopped.
Beautiful day for a ride..
Me and Lon did the BlueRidge Parkway.
Scott,Baggage and the Dukes went the other direction.
Everybody returned safe and with tales to tell.
About 60 folks here give or take.
Food was good.
Beer id cold.
Bonfire is blazin.
gotta go.

My Friday count is 26 Rocket III with 12 darksiders. 46%

Scowherd has made a major difference and contribution...three cheers:

By Saturday the numbers had temporarily swelled to 29, with a couple drive through Captains on their way to a shindig down the road. The final number of overnight lodging Captain at the Holiday and across the street was 27 and the darksider count remained at 12. The number of odd balls was near to a dozen including Hondas, Yamahas, and HDs.

It only snaps in half if the preload isn't adjusted right and there is no freeplay. Check your tires and check your freeplay...everyday.

I'm working on a potato bike tomorow.

The freeplay was fine. It had some play same as any motorcycle I've ever owned and I've owned bikes for 39 years. It wasn't sloppy loose and wasn't too tight. Therefore, I'd have to disagree with you in this case unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean by freeplay.

As far as checking things, I don't just hop on and ride. I do a pre-check to include fluids, tires, etc... and a general walk around. I spent an hour going through the bike the night before checking every nut and bolt I could reach and all the fluids.

Thanks for blaming it on me, however. I appreciate it. ;)

It appears you guys are having a ball. **** do I envy you right now. I started to jump in and go at the last minute but apparently the good Lord looks out for the lame and foolish. I have had a continuous toothache for five days. Root canal procedure on Monday first thing. Anyway, enjoy, ride safe, and return home safely with great memories and new friendships.
