Daymaker Type Headlights (Chinese Copies)

@Claviger and @Ishrub Is it possible to use the halo ring as both a DRL and a turn signal? For example, always on orange and blinks when signal is used OR always on white and switches to blinking orange when signal is used?

Thanks!
I have my Chinese lights wired just as your asking- White running lights, low beam, high beam, and built in turn signals. The orange light is wired into turn signals which flash in low and high beam, they also turn off the appropriate running light when flashing with running lights on. The orange and white rings are really bright. You must put in an off/on switch to turn off the headlights (low beam for mine) for the running lights to function. Really neat and clean looking. Have video but can't load it into this site.

Take a look at this
http://bit.ly/rlc2doc - The hardware is here Multi Functional Timers

I would wire the DRL's to the side lights and fit a switch to deactivate the low beam during the day.

BUT allow me a word of caution. With the headlights on you wont see the orange too well, if at all. And in some countries I know it is illegal as there has to me a separation twixt Headlights and indicators.

Ok. This makes a lot of sense. Didn’t think about the fact that you wouldn’t really able to see the halo when the headlights are on - and I don’t think I’d want to drive with the headlights off.

By DRL’s, are you talking about using white halos for DRL’s and no healight during the day? Historically' I’ve used my high beam during the day for visibility. I don’t have a grasp on how visible the halo ring would be during the day.

Here are pictures with DRL, low beam, Low beam with turn, DLR with turn. I tried to catch turn signal as it flashed so might be slightly blurred.

DRL's by definition are made for Daylight Running. They give you visibility. This becomes even more obvious with LED headlights which are very directional and produce little scatter.

DRL's on M/C are still a bit of a grey area here (the law has still to be modified to reflect the option - unlike cars which are covered) but the BMW's fitted with them ex-factory are (imo) more visible than earlier similar models running on headlights.

In Bright sunlight (imo) it makes no difference - any sun reflecting of a screen or chrome is MUCH brighter.

@leatal - I would like to see similar photos taken outside from a distance of at least 50 feet. ime - what looks good in the garage does not always replicate outside on the street. But Those look good close up.

You are correct sire. They are brighter inside, in shade, or in overcast conditions than in bright sunlight. I'll post an outside picture later today.

Here you are. Headlight vs DRL, with turn signals at 30 feet (50 feet seems too far away for camera). Headlamps brighter when head on but dimmer at angle. Both actually appear brighter when viewed than photo.

This is really helpful! I appreciate you taking the time! Might I mention that I'm jealous you can actually take your bike out right now. If I did, it would need to be on skis!

Well just pack everything up and move down to the beautiful south! We ride all year long. Actually the weather is better in the winter than the summer. No bugs, cooler temps with low humidity, it's great!

Interesting. One of these days I want to set up a test positioning the camera offset to see how things look from an opposing drivers POV.

One idea that occurs to me is running on DRL's only and make them flicker a bit. High intensity LEDS do not flicker well ime. But lots of small ones can be made to. Some say this makes a difference - I need to see it for myself. 3-5Hz. It would not be legal here, but .............................

But I'd want my indicators elsewhere.

All your dreams for side and rear appearance of your indicators to observers and you can read the specs to your hearts content in the instruction guides.
