Performance - diy pipes vs pro's

I'm really wanting something like the carpenter street rod pipes, but ****, at $1600 what is so special about them? I have have half the mind to spend $500 on a okayish welder and make my own. Is there something we don't know that makes these things so pricey? Does anyone have any experience making there own? Is there any real performance difference between homemade and what the pros do?
 
I had a set of Preds on my last bike ...there wasn’t much to them ....the hardest part to make would be the collector .....sadly I sold them as they did not fit my Roadster

I am sure Paul and Art will be along quite soon to explain how easy it is to throw a set of pipes together:p
If you have your own welder , pipe bending machine etc etc etc and if for high performance a dyno to check the added power I say go for it.
Seems the collector is the easy bit as it can be bought off the shelf for not a lot of money

I was definitely wondering how I would pull that part of it off. I might just end up doing this. It's not so much the money, its the I could buy a welder for this, and pipe bender for this, and could have the 2 new tools plus the exhaust for approximately the same price if not a little less. I will probably wrap the pipes anyway so it don't need to be pretty. I want my bike to be ugly and mean looking.

You would need a mandrel bender and that would cost $1000’s .......and no need to when you can buy bends off the shelf :thumbsup: My friend who makes my T bars has a bender....the tooling for each size tube is £400 upwards ......You could just tack the pieces together with a mig welder and then get it professionally tig welded ..... I might make one one day and get my friend to tig it......

I've heard that the most important piece of that simple looking puzzle is the part that connects the oval exhaust ports to the header was designed by a high tech computer program for optimum flow, then cut on a CNC machine.
 
I also had that idea. Solved the port connection problem by purchasing a used set of headers. I gutted my original exhaust cans and never got around to doing anything else. Maybe one of these days.
