Stator/Rotor Removal

It's a taper fit like a Morse or Jarno taper. Tighten the bolt up as tight as you can without bending things and then whack the hex end of the bolt with a 3 lb mallet. The shock will release the taper and she will come right off. Neater than sliced bread. :D
Same thing as removing valve springs. You can tighten the spring compressor until it bends and it won't let go but give it some tension and tap it with a hammer and it lets go easily.

Same thing that happened to mine. Snap ring failed and let third gear try to engage whilst in another gear. As you disassemble the gears you'll find a snap ring not in its groove. Please take a picture of it before you remove it so we can determine if it was assembled backwards. Mine was backwards, I suspect yours was too. How many miles on your bike ? Also do you know if it had the update kit installed ?

I had it since new in 05. Never had the update kit installed. When mine locked up it threw me off. Woke up in a hospital bed and was off work for seven weeks. You were lucky for sure. I will keep you updated and more pics to follow.

I found a complete gearbox assembly on ebay but it's out of a touring model. If anyone can confirm that it's the same, then I'll buy it ASAP.

Wow, you are tough ! I cannot even imagine that happening at speed.

I once went over the handlebars when I hit a lawn care trailer that turn left in front of me -- i was going about 5 mph --
