I do run a ethanol mix (California), and I have been running 91 octane, should I try the regular 87?
Yes and possibly explains the heat issue to some degree, try switching to the lower octane and if possible the lowest ethanol content possible

Thank you for all of the help, it is very much appreciated!

Well, Here is the Beast. I wrapped the header, and stuck a modified heat shield on there for the moment. I am going to do something else eventually, but this at least makes it tolerable.
I do like the exhaust system, and love the sound!... But there are a couple of things that I will put out there that I think are fair:

1. Even with the ceramic coating, this system is HOT.
2. The system shipped without the spacers, so I had to use modified Sportster exhaust gaskets. Spacers should be shipped with the system. Paul did send them after we contacted him and told him about the exhaust leaks.
3. Heat Shields should be available for this from Viking, so the fit and finish looks as good as it is supposed to. I am pretty bummed that I have to cover up all of that gorgeous work with Heat Tape, and a hokey looking heat shield.

Paul, you do great work, and I am ok with what I got.... I just want to be up front and fair.

In response to your Comments Donivan, which I take as constructive criticism.

1. Even with the ceramic coating, this system is HOT.
You seam to be the only person who has had a problem with this much heat.
Perhaps as Hans suggested when he referred to the Ethanol fuel, possibly explains the heat issue to some degree, try switching to the lower octane and if possible the lowest ethanol content possible.

These "Spacers" are not a normal requirement hence they are not shipped with the system.
I did have one system that we had leak with, it seamed to be hitting on one of the fins below the exhaust port.
We decided that spacing the pipe out from the head a little would cure this.
It turned out that the problem was elsewhere.
I build all my exhaust systems as a "Direct replacement" for the stock system, no modifications required to the bike at all, no trimming of covers, moving Brake Master Cylinders etc.
And the use of the stock copper gaskets at the port.
Why you had a problem in this area, I do not know.

3. Heat Shields should be available for this from Viking.

Whilst some people have fitted a small shield, I know of two, there are over 45 systems out there now with out shields.
I know of one other that has been heat tape wrapped.
Again this would go back to your over hot running condition, something (this excess heat) that I suggest you be very aware of and find the cause of.
You could do damage to the Engine if this excess heat is not rectified.

I am running 87 octane now, and I have no choice about the ethanol. I also put in the tune that Hanso graciously sent me that bumped it to 5% richer. It still runs hot, but it is bearable with the tape and shields. As I said, you do good work, those were the only things that have complaints about. It is a **** shame that I have to cover the beautiful work that you did. I believe there are a few others out there that have had some issues with the heat. It is, what it is...

Super D. There is definitely something askew with either your Fuel Air Ratio or Ignition timing tables, or both.

I have the same Paul Bryant header with the aluminum ceramic coating. I did not expect new gaskets with it so I ordered them seperately. I was new to Tune ECU and downloaded a tune that fit the description of my setup and went riding. Big grin, Wow what a huge HP/Torque gain. Couldn't leave well enough alone and thought I could eeek out a little more, so I started trying different tunes and can't remember which one, but all of a sudden I could feel a lot of heat coming off the header. I was only running maybe 2 miles and returned to the garage to find I had overheated the header and dulled the beautiful ceramic coating. Changed the tune back and the heat went away. Since then I have installed PC5 + AT and a Hanso map and the bike runs perfectly and just as cool as stock if not cooler. I just consider myself lucky that I noticed the extra heat soon enough to not ruin the engine, and I love the headers and setup I've got now.

Thanks also to Paul and Hanso and all the great inputs from members like you. We have a great thing here with this forum. Keep us posted

O.k. With that being said, what temp. are you at after a 20 mile ride? I have put it out there a few different times, and no one has posted a answer. Paul, after riding at a normal speed (60 - 70 mph), what should the temp be? I just got back from a 20 mile ride, with the heat tape, the top part of the header pipes were about 570 F. Where the heat shield is was about 220 F. I am looking for a #.

Quite honestly Donivan, I have no idea.
That could range quite considerable.
Usually when I go out for a ride, I start and warm the bike thoroughly, then when I get out on the road I go pretty hard.
Even when riding like this I've never had a heat issue.
Next time I'm out and ride hard like this I'll take a heat reading when I get back, that could be a while as it's Winter here in NZ at present and fair persisting down.

"Winter" in your area of NZ is only a relative term when considering harsh Maine winters...

FYI - Your crossover pipe is great. Very satisfied - thanks!
