[Furrowed brow] While I understand that it cost four or five times -- not even counting the labor -- to assemble a new vehicle from the separate purchased parts -- I don't see how a set of gears could be anywhere near the cost of the vehicle, even well used -- unless I'm missing what you are saying.

I've never priced rocket gears but I know many years ago gears were $150.00 or more a piece for a V-65 Honda. If you bought the "complete set-up" like Jag is talking about, I would thinking mucho deniro :eek:

P.S. Old Rockets are only worth 4-5 grand :(

And goes to explain @warp9.9 oft offered advice of " . . . or find a cheap Rocket and swap engines."

My tranny rebuild at Carpenter was $4000, about twice his original phone guestimate. He apologized profusely, but I did tell him that I wanted the deluxe job, anything even remotely possible to be worn or damaged replaced, plus he undercut the gears and added a billet 4th gear. I'd much rather pay $4000 once than $2000 twice.

Labor is on you so I would think 2k to 2.5 k and you have your parts. Then you know you are good to go!
2k for a used motor and you still have know idea if it's any good and or for how long? If you love the bike and plan on keeping her who cares as long as she is reliable.
 
The question has been answered ! Drum roll please

This used to hold the 3rd 4th gear cluster together. It was installed the wrong way. Probably when the update kit was installed before I owned it. Here is where the snap ring should be.

It tried to go into third gear whilst still in 4th or 5th.

The snap ring shows a lot of wear. Like it was trying to get off for awhile. The 4th gear engagement dogs show some wear which is what would try to put side load on the failed snap ring. Also don't much like the appearance of the stator. Never had a charging problem but can't explain it's appearance.

This was my system for flipping the engine over. Had some old seat cushions. Just rolled the engine off the lift onto one cushion then completely upside down onto the next one.

Wow! great pics! I too can't believe the ring groove is that shallow? It could easily be twice that depth without compromising the strength of the shaft. Can't believe they would design it that way.

So, ya, now that you see it and can get it right, you'll have plenty of confidence in your ride once she's back together! Forget the Valkyrie!;)
