Redesigned RamAir filter available for ordering

Thank Ramair for the code, it's right on the web page. :) They refunded my purchase due to special circumstances around customs etc where I live so I could re-order; when I re-ordered, I figured since it was 10% off may as well grab the normally 15 pound cleaning and re-treating kit while I was at it, so I should be covered for some time to come on the air filter front.

OK, so my throttle cable snapped on my way to Laughlin, and I had to cancel my trip thanks to the typical 7 day lead time to get any Triumph parts here on the West Coast :banghead: Anyway, at least that gave me time to install the redesigned RamAir, replace a leaking cam cover gasket and check the valves.

As others have reported, the filter kit is very well thought out, and the installation was a breeze with the detailed instructions. However, I think they still didn't quite nail the rubber collar redesign. The groove that matches to the lip in the throttle body has been cut much lower (distance 'a' in the first photo below) than in the stock plenum. This requires you to push the filter farther down the throttle bodies before the lip engages. That's fine and should result in a better fit, but it's almost as if RamAir was not aware of the secondary throttle plate axle casting which is in the way (see the 2nd photo below).

The filter does lock down to the throttle body lip very positively when pushed down. However, on my first two attempts at tightening the clamps (very gently), I noticed the clamp pressure forced the lip out of the groove either on the upper or lower side of the throttle body. I think you could cut small notches in the area highlighted in red in the 2nd photo and have a great fit, but I didn't want to cut up my brand new filter at least quite yet. Instead, I pushed the filter firmly against the throttle body while tightening the clamp, and that seemed to do the trick.

Overall I'm very happy with the filter and I think it fits fine now, but I can see a possibility for installation problems even with the new design. Once done tightening the clamps, make sure the rubber collars still sit perfectly perpendicular to the throttle bodies!

Is there a stated torque in the install manual?

No, but the supplied clamps are Mikalor ASFA L 50-70mm, and the manufacturer recommends max. 4Nm. The reason I know this is because my first thought was to buy wider clamps (12mm vs. 9mm), but I think that would just make things worse, since the throttle body clamping area is no wider than 9mm (again because of those secondary throttle blade axle housings).

You could also have talked to http://www.barnettclutches.com/ - but since they make the cables when you order, it would probably not have been faster. They've also had issues with screwing up the length when people order, myself and another person have experienced this. They did rectify it without cost obviously, and the quality of the end product is great.

Got mine just now (literally, just came home from the post office) and they look great. Got the cleaning kit as well for future use, looks complete with rubber gloves and everything, so good to know that's covered as well. Thanks for the heads up, still need to pay attention to the mounting process and make sure they're really on there, but once they're on they should stay on with the groove/lip in there. I'm getting rather excited to get out in the garage, hoist the bike on the lift and start ripping out air duct.

Yeah the earlier issues with Mk 1 of these filters actually had me researching hose clamps. Looks like they're not all created equal. Might it be worthwhile for those of us who are borderline OCD about some details to change them out?

http://www.breezehoseclamps.com/breeze/constant-torque/ is one that seems to promise a lot, but the world of hose clamps is kind of new to me. :)

Post 190 of this thread - I took the time to measure and draw up the sizes and take pics and emailed this all to ramair. I reckon they have there heads so far up their own arses to listen or take not of people trying to help them as it would be a win win for all. I have emailed them about buying the new high HP ramiar filter but have heard nothing....

Thanks for the pix and heads up about the interference. I am looking for the filter to arrive in the next day or so, you are making the install easier.
Talked to Hanso and Scott at The Hub about the proper tune to install when this is done, what are you considering using?
