Eroding alloy on wheels

Yes,they should never have problems like this,i agree and if triumph know about the problem with & without laquer why dont they just coat them in the beginning.it doesnt realy bother me coz i want black wheels anyway but a lot like shiney wheels, its them i feel sorry for

Lacquer can pit and go scabby quite easily. Years ago ally rims weren't coated or painted neither were engine casings. It was up to the owner to maintain them or not. Those that did were addicted to Autosol.

I take your point and agree that in this day and age you would expect them to be maintenance free but in my opinion it'snot enough to spoil the enjoyment of a superb bike.

I have never cleaned my wheels - I looked at them and thought "If I start this - I'm Gona regret it"... Mine will get powder coated when the time comes.

Well, there's nothing really that bad about untreated aluminium, but poorly treated aluminium with a layer of lacquer in the way for polishing is kind of a pain. If you can get at the wheel with the appropriate tools to polish it it's no different than having to polish the chrome or the windshield, everything gets dirty. Just polish it, then apply an appropriate wax for aluminium.

But it would have been nice if they had been chromed from the factory...

I am on my 3rd Rocket, 08 plate had the wheels replaced under warranty and the last, an 11, the wheels started oxidizing while still under warranty. Triumph didn't want to know. Took them to be polished and sold 6 months later for a 13 Roadster. They started to go after a year. Both of them never go out in winter (I've retired) and are always wiped with ACF50 before putting away. Again, wrote to John Bloor. Again, not interested. Said they made a board decision not to treat the wheels after all the problems they had with the earlier models that were lacquered. I own a 2012 Cooper S and the wheels are also alloy and are never more than washed. Still perfect. Was going to buy a XCX but, instead, selling the Roadster and buying a Kawasaki Z1000SX. Have been riding Triumphs since passing my test in 63 and will never purchase another one. To say the bikes can only be used in dry weather is absolutely disgusting and Mr. Bloor should hang his head in shame. Had to get mine powder coated before I could sell it.
Hope yours will be as good as mine are after the powder coating but we should not need to do it.
Regards, Martin

Would anyone like to e-mail or post a reply telling me about the experiences with their wheels and I am going to have a go at Mr. Bloor. I am really angry that, a 16 month old bike, never been out in the winter, kept in a garage with a breathable cover on, the wheels wiped with ACF50 and the alloy has discoloured so soon. To be told that the bikes are meant to be looked at, not ridden, is an insult to motorcyclists and to supply wheels on a £14,000 bike that have absolutely no protection on is a disgrace. I am going to try and get Mr. Bloor to honour his commitment to us and help with the cost of our powder coating, polishes and anything else we have had to do. I am not looking to have lazy people who cannot be bothered to look after their bikes refunded but genuine Triumph owners who take great pride in their machines and like them to look as good as they go.
If I get enough comments perhaps, just perhaps, Mr. Bloor will use some of the millions he has made from us and provide wheels that ARE meant to be ridden.

its the crap aly used in the wheels is the problem, ive had my 2015 rocket about 2 months now and theres marks on the rear wheel that wont shift with the usual cleaning process.ive got polishing equipment as ive made various bike parts for my bikes over the years but cant be arsed with taking the wheel off every few months to polish it.Ive made ally parts for bikes and not touched them for months at a time and had no trouble getting them back to a polished finish with little effort.the rocket wheels, along with the m1800 wheels i had on my previous bike are made from crap! which is fine if powder coated, which is what i wanted anyway so thats the route im taking with the rocket.

This works good for me and about five times faster than flitz. Follow the directions works great but only on aluminum. Not so good on other metals. Don't get me wrong, I do like flitz but this stuff work better.

I just ordered 4 of their products including the aluminum polish and cleaner you pictured. Thanks for that link....
