My starter failed me 200 miles from home today

Hmmm....if he got it started "directly via the starter" then the starter is ok. It may still be the ignition switch given that the lights didn't come on after startup. May also be the starter relay located under the right side panel.

The rovery guy said that there was no live going to the relay but it was clicking when pressing the starter switch. is it possible that the relay could fail and still click?

more than likely you have a bad ignition switch. if you put 12 volts into the lights fuse and every thing works. then your trouble is either main fuse, ign switch or connector under the tank.
regardless of your problem you need to install the eastern beaver or similar system. to keep this from happening again
some of the roadsters had an upgrade relay but i don't know the years.

it is possible for the relay to click(energize relay) and the power be missing or lack of volts to work either the headlights or the starter solenoid.
do to the amount of draw on the lights they need to be taken out of the ign circuit and hooked with relays to the bat circuit.

i was thinking because you could get it started by towing i don't think it is the ign switch. i would change the starter relay first.

Guy;s, news today is that it was a connevtion to the headlight that had burnt out and apparently they are on the same circuit as the starter which means that the live feed was not getting to the relay?????

all running sweet now

thanks for the help. i'm sure ill be back ;-)

Sounds like the known issue with the headlight being powered through the ignition switch which causes it to burn out over time, then? That's why people here hit up http://www.easternbeaver.com and buy one of his relay kits that bypasses the keyswitch and takes power to the headlights straight from the battery (or a junction box, or a http://pdm60.com or a http://www.fuzeblocks.com or however you want to solve it.)

as a guess i think that roadster has the relay that power comes from bat and goes through relay then to the dimmer switch to headlights.
it has been said that might burn out the dimmer switch. but i have not heard of any.
