Ignition problems?

As a lot of you know on the standard and classic models of the Rocket there have been instances where the ignition switch failed...usually at an inopportune time (mine was when I worked at Sears after I got off of work at 9 pm at night.

Have any of the R3T owners seen this problem coming up or is there a different type of ignition switch used since it since it is now part of the fuel gage cluster on top of the tank (I think...maybe I should have looked at a picture....I'll check my "copy" of the R3T Owners manual I have now on the computer).

Just curious.

I'm "lucky". I have had both the Classic and Touring ignition switch replaced under warranty!

Groover, what happened to your R3T ignition switch that it had to be replaced?

Intermittent to then regular no power to bike when the ignition turned on.

While this was happening the key in the ignition switch became quite hot. When the switch was replaced I was told that there was no apparent damage to the switch.

Now with new switch the bike always power when turned on and the key stays cool.

Have had no problems so far. The ignition sits north of the cluster and would be considered part of the cluster. The chrome cluster contours the gas tank and the switch sits lower then the speedo but still very accessible. Hopefully I have no issues as I am finding out my dealer isnt worth a sh*t.

Kmutt, hope your Rockets stay's trouble free. We are fortunate in Pensacola to have a pretty good dealership, they might have a couple of rough spots here and there but overall they try to do well by the customer. Since I used to work there on the inside I know a lot of what that dealership (and more than likely what most other dealerships) has to put up with, deal with both from suppliers, customers, vendors and the staff as well. They do pretty well, I don't think they'll give away the store to make a sale but they try to accomodate you as much as possible. Why don't you send that dealer/owner down south to get an idea what he should be offering his customers.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear about the ignition switch so far. I'm doing some preliminary research on the R3T in preparation for possibly getting a new one when I'm done over here. If I don't sell mine (so far no serious bites) I'll probably just trade it in. The other monster looming on the horizon is the new Gold Wing. But I'm getting mixed signals from the other GW forums and no one is sure if a new edition (other than paint color) with bigger engine is coming out this year or not. But so far I'm leaning towards the R3T as my "best of both worlds" next ride.

Dennis,
I can tell you for sure that I absolutely love this bike (makes my wife nervous!). It handles well, rides smooth, handy for small errands (milk, post office, small auto parts).
The one thing that I like best about this bike is the sheer size is very noticeable. I know there are issues with cagers not seeing bikes but for some reason I seem to be noticed by the cages on the road. I did add the Aux driving lights and Im sure this helps. Then theres the power. I have gotten used to it and will be making mods to improve performance in some areas, but Im not looking to make a super bike out of it. It certainly does well stock, but some tuning will do it good. Keep us posted on the hunt and good luck! Also stay safe
