R3T Mileage with Tuneboy Tune

Finally got some time to put on a few miles since loading the latest Tuneboy tune for my R3T. All the riding I'd done before today was to 'test' the tunes. That consisted of many zero to 100 mph runs.

On my way out this morning I topped off the tank and quickly calculated that my 'testing' had resulted in my getting 25.4 miles per gallon. After filling the tank the gas gauge couldn't figure out where it wanted to settle. It did its normal '3 or 4 miles' to read full thing and then after about 10 miles dropped to between 3/4 and 1/2 with the miles to empty reading around 120. The gauge continued to fluctuate between 1/2 and full for the next 80 miles. Having no idea what kind of mileage I was getting I decided to top it off. To my surprise I was getting right at 40 miles per gallon. After that fill up the gauge returned to normal. I ran about 350 miles just cruising right around 65 and continued to get 40 miles per gallon.

That's with the D&D exhaust, drop K&N with the snorkel removed, and the 20235 tune modified by Wayne and then further modified by me per Wayne's suggestion to open the secondaries 100%. Needless to say I am very pleased. That mileage figure matches the best I got before any modifications and the bike runs great.

how do the D&D's sound?

They're certainly louder than stock, but I wouldn't call them LOUD by any stretch. On D&D's website there's a dyno video with sound.

With earplugs I can't hear them at cruising speed. Under acceleration they sound pretty nice though..

Do you get some of the HP back, compared to the standard R3?

Having only ridden the Standard for a 10-15 mile test ride I'm probably not the best judge. But with that disclaimer, I think a majority of the lost power is available.

When I installed the D&D's and the Triumph 20235 tune I noticed an improvement. I then installed a modified tune from Wayne that opened the secondaries roughly 20% more than the 20235 tune. That also provided a noticeable seat of the pants difference. After emailing Wayne my impressions he then suggested that I open the secondaries 100% across the board. Now keep in mind that his modified 20235 tune only opened the secondaries to 100% in 4th and 5th gear from 0 to 2250 RPMs. It then tapered off to 63% at 3746 RPMs to 6000 RPMs. 1st and 2nd gear were only opened 15% from 0 to 2250. All 5 gears were set at 63% at 6000 RPMs.

As you might imagine, changing all settings to 100% provided a BIG improvement. Most noticeably in lower gear acceleration and running toward top end in 5th. Before the changes I felt the bike really flattened out from around 85 or 90 to 110-115. It now pulls very strong up to 110-115. My test road near my house doesn't provide enough room to go any faster but with the speed limiter left at 120 (no provision to change that) I suspect at 115 it will flatten out very quickly anyway. Lower gear acceleration now reminds me of a Viper I used to own. You'd better be pointed straight ahead when pinning the throttle. That 180 rear tire doesn't provide quite the contact patch of the 240.
