to get them powder coated, as per the advice of several posters here. I needed new tires anyway and figured it would be a great time to get it done. The shop is taking some of the wheel guts out says he can put them back on all except for the wheel seals. He points to one of them and it does look a little jacked up. My question is, should I replace the wheel bearings now, or do I shop around for just the seals? Bike has 7k on it, 2012 Roadster. Can you buy just the seals? 'Preciate an insight, thanks.

Imho wheel bearing should be ok..only problems with them is if you take them out/install them without proper tools..7k's are nothing for those bearings, i would make sure they were properly remove and installed right, i will keep them, get new seals and call it a day.

So here's the problem:
To remove wheel bearings, the only way to do that is to knock on the centre race to get them out; that is a no-no for re-use as you are banging that centre race against the balls and in turn against the outer race - same reason as why, when you install them, you are pressing on the outer race, never the centre.

So for me, for the cost of the bearings, replace them.
You're looking at $57 (incl seals) - not a lot to have un-compromised parts

^ Got to agree , bearings are relatively cheap , reusing the old bearings , if they fail can be very expensive !!

It is usually better to freshen things up when you get them torn down rather than having to just turn around and get them done later....usually when it is the most inconvenient time!

Agreed, get new bearings and seals and any other parts that will wear out. The parts are relatively cheap, the work to replace them if you have to do it when the wheels aren't already off not so much.

See - when even the Scottish guys are telling you to spend the money, you really should do it. :D

(I'm actually from Dunfermline, scot in exile - just back from trip there a couple of weeks ago)

What I was saying earlier:

Note: The bearings will be damaged during the removal process and should not be reused. The hammer blows transmit their impact through the balls causing small flat spots, which will cause the bearing to quickly fail if reused.

And you did not bring me back any irn bru:mad: Dunfermline the old capital of Scotland know it well spent many a Saturday afternoon at East End Park watching the pars, most if not all Americans have probably never heard of Dunfernline but they have heard of its most famous son Andrew Carnegie.

And you did not bring me back any irn bru:mad: ...

I did bring back some Arbroath Smokies for the Mrs & me.

Those are one of my favourite things Scottish!
Had a run up there on the Saturday and had them vacuum packed right at the source and left the next morning.
They traveled surprisingly well! Although Security at Chicago had to open my luggage to see what they were after showing on the X-Ray
