recall shifting sensor

My '13 R3R does the same thing. Releasing the clutch a bit and a good kick seem to drop it into 1st just fine though.

Interesting. I can find neutral when downshifting in my other bikes, easily. My 97 Rocket Classic likes to go into first and the be clicked into neutral before it lets me rest the clutch hand. Sometimes, it will take neutral while approaching a stop. I am guessing that each bike, like people, has it's particular quirks. Even if they are twin sisters. That is just part of the fun. The British say that you fly the Mustang, one of the best aircraft ever made, and strap on the Spitfire. In that spirit, the Rocket is not a bland or docile bike. It commands and requires the driver's input and attention.

Anyone hear anymore about a recall?

This thread started 7 years ago and is mostly about early Rockets pre 2010 Roadsters. The clutch etc was upgraded a few times since then. Usually if an issue starts it pays to check cable adjustment first - as they age they stretch and the clutch wears too.

Neutral hard to find or select especially when stopped? A few turns of adjustment at the hand lever and voila it all starts working again fine in my experience with my 2010 Roadster. This may also remedy dropping out of gear as it may not be fully engaged if clutch not adjusted.

I've only popped out of gear once, and I was pretty sure I had not ensured a complete downshift. When downshifting, as when coming to a stop, first gear comes in smartly on my bike. Getting it from neutral either you can give it a goodly stomp, or rock the bike, or hold pressure on the gearshift and let out the clutch til it catches. All in all, it seems to be just what the bike wants...like has been said...a quirk, and all bikes got them. Neutral is sometimes hard to find, but again, few bikes have a neutral that doesn't hide from time to time.

In addition to the above, I've also had quite a bit of luck just giving the throttle a good twist when she's being an ass, and it sets things right. Every now and again on some of the mountain roads around here I'll pull over to take a picture from one of the dirt/pea gravel pullouts. Not exactly safe footing for rocking the beast back and forth safely. So when she doesn't want to grab first from neutral I just rev her to up over 3k real quick, then drop it back to idle and suddenly she's happy to engage and roll on.

I had it pop out in first when I first got it, I developed the habit of letting the clutch out slightly to ensure its in gear. Ya know, cagers see light green and go, don't want to get rear ended if it is not fully engaged. The neutral however has always been great, a light tap with the heel, always goes in, My wifes sportster, is a whole other story, always difficult to get in neutral.

THere was a post a while back that said if u r sitting a good while with the clutch pulled in and u put it in 1st then it might pop out. i found this to be true. now if i am setting in neutral for a while i just let the clutch out then pull it in and it goes in hard and it works fine.:D
