GPS Mounts

Just tried out my new GPS mount form RAM and it works very well for just under $60 to the front door. Their site is www.ram-mount.com I'll post some pics in my album later, there always to big for me to post on a thread and I'm too stupid/lazy to figure out how to shrink them.

GPS Mounts

Hi,
You didn't say what type of GPS you have, I have a Garmin Nuvi 300 and would like to find a mount kit for it, now I use my tank bag with clear plastic top. This is excellent except on bright sunny days wearing sunglasses as it is hard to see, great at night or a dull day though. The next issue is power supply.

I have made up a small loom incorporating a fuse and cig lighter socket. I connected it direct to the battery and it tucks nicely under the tool holder. Just connect the GPS cable to it and run it up run the side of the tank under the seat. I use masking tape to hold the wire to the tank so it won't chafe the paint. Its all a bit primitive but you gotta get power to the GPS.

Aussie John

Magellan

I have the Meridian Gold by Magellan, but they make a mount for most any brand.

Fyi

I've been using a TomTom Rider ( made for motorcycles ) for over a year and having great results. I'd used their car unit several years before that and never had a problem. It comes with it's own powered docking station that keeps the unit charged whenever it ignition is on.

I do have other accessories that need holders and like others have mentioned, RAM has just about any and everything related to what you'll need. I found by talking with one of the reps, and giving him the dimensions of your GPS, they can direct you to what might work best.

If it doesn't meet your requirements, they have been more than happy to have you return it and either find something else or receive a full refund.

Whenever I use my GPS, which is not that often, I just suction cup it to the front of the tach. Never has been a problem yet. Although with the T-Bars, the gauges are cradled under the bars.

Any concerns with the non-m/c specific GPS units getting rained on? Are they semi- or fully waterproof? I don't have the funds for a $500+ TT Rider or Garmin. I'm looking at the lower end Tom Tom.

GPS units in rain

Like any electronic piece of equipment, if they are not dedicated "all weather operation", do not get them wet. Its like your cell phones, get em wet you have done your dash. I have a Garmin Nuvi, I have a clear plastic envelope that fits on my tankbag, I have it in there to protect it from rain.

I would recommend that a handle bar mounted unit should have a plastic bag or cover fitted over it to prevent water ingress. Simple thing to do really as you dont want to screw a $500 plus GPS.

Regards
John
